Hello All!
I am new to Backyardchickens but not new to chickens. As a kid we had anywhere from 25 to 50 chickens at a time, both for meat and for eggs. I am now in my late 50's and a few years back I brought home 4 young chicks from the hardware store to get some eggs. Little did I know that my "Townie" SO would take them under her wing as her own children. Prior to this my view of chickens was as livestock. Now, apparently, they are "pets", or perhaps my SO would say "My children". This has been an eye-opening experience for me.
Anyhow, we have had some 15 chickens since that fateful day, lost a few to the surrounding wildlife and one to heat stroke. At the moment we have a total of 5 hens and one rooster. The hens are a white Bantam of some sort (not sure as to breed as she is a rescue), two bantam Cochins, one Buff Orprington, one silver wyandotte and Notly, the rooster who is without question the most adorable rooster (two words that should not be isn the same sentence) I have ever known. He can be held and petted (not by me, but by my SO) and he doesn't attack anyone in his "flock" including me and my Chihuahua. He will run off the wild turkeys though. As a youngster he used to perch on my laptop screen as I was surfing the internet.
Anyhow, enough about me. Thanks for having me in your group.... Photo is of Notly roosting on my computer screen.
