I have 8 lovely Welsummers, about 4-5 weeks old. Yesterday, instead of just the "peeping" noises they incessantly and delightlfully make, a couple of them were "trilling" like a songbird. It's very cute and pleasant, but it startled me. I'm new to chickenhood, and I wasn't aware they did that. Is it just a phase they go through on the way to cluckdom, or will they keep doing it?

It's a sign of contentment(from what I've read on here)...and yes, they will keep doing it...mine do it every night as they go to sleep in the coop

I've heard two kinds. One is in daytime and occasional, and becomes a roo about two months later- I thought it the most wonderful noise, completely unrelated to juvie crowing. It was just like a songbird.

The other was like a trill and was as if they were whispering at a slumber party. That's at night or naptime.

ACK! No, no, can't be a roo! I can't have a roo! This was during the day and not in the least bit quiet.

I love that sound. All of mine do that at night when they are going to sleep. My silkies make that noise all the time. I do think it is a contentment noise.

My hens and new chickies have a variety of sounds that they make. I can tell the difference between.... "yay, here comes treats", " I am going to lay an egg", " I am laying an egg" "I want to come out and free range", " I have found something lovely to eat (rooster)", ok, I am somewhat happy but possibly unsure", "I am slightly uncomfortable", " I am unhappy", " I am very unhappy right now"

Takes a while, but I can now tell what sound means what. Pretty cool.

My first batch trilled and I thought I was hearing things. It sounds so pretty. However I did have two roos and one pullet so... I don't hear it much now since I kicked them out to the kennel in the coop. Maybe my new hatch will do it.
