Boy did I get a score today. Had a dream last night that I should go to the local humane society today so I did! I found a beautiful Hen! She's healthy as far as I know what to look for, red comb and wattles, no sores, no worms in regular poo... etc.

The only thing is that I have no idea how old, or what breed she is. She was an anonymous drop-off! She doesn't look like my other RIR's and her tail-feathers are more pronounced.

I can also know for sure she is a hen because my 5 month old roo immediately took to trying to mate her

. I wonder if that means she's of age to lay!!! My other 3 RIR's are only 11 weeks old and he's never done that to them! Well...

Also- is this a bad thing? Will mating hurt her? Ive noticed on the biggest of my RIR's, her tail-feathers are all jacked up. Could that be why? I've only seen him do it to the new hen.

Anywho here are some pics of her perhaps if anyone can identify?

she's a really pretty chick...i must agree with crtrlovr, adding new unquarantine chickens to a flock can be asking for trouble. she does look like a mix of BR and RIR

I spoke from sad experience -- even WITH quarantine observed, you can still have problems. I've quarantined all new birds that came in for AT LEAST two weeks; no signs of illness whatsoever (except in one instance, one of them got out and joined the main flock; I can't remember which one(s), so the quarantine was pretty much a bust) . I had a small flock of adults I got (all 6 from the same owner, as a group) no problems. In the past 2 years, I bought some feed store babies (they stayed in my house until they were at least 2 1/2 mos old, and I hatched some eggs in my little Turn-X incubator (having several disasters, I still ended up with 7 beautiful frizzle cochin babies who are now almost 3 1/2 mos old, and I'm scared to death and holding my breath), and I got a trio of OEGB BB reds, 3 Golden comets, and 5 Silkies (1 splash roo, 4 white pullets). All quarantined, all seemed fine. To make a long, painful story short , when I AGAIN had 3 more 3-5 mo. old bantam OEGB young ones get sick and present the same odd symptoms as some I lost in the spring, I gritted my teeth, took them to the vet for euthanasia, and had them sent to Breathitt county for intensive necropsy. The diagnosis: multiple strains of coccidiosis and Marek's. The vet here asked me where I got my birds and I told him I'd gotten some from individuals at a trade show/flea market type set up and he just sadly shook his head. He advised me to from now on (meaning until EVERY chicken I now have dies) to keep a closed flock, and after they're all gone, drench the ground, strip out the house & run, bleach & drench every surface they might have ever touched or that their dander may have blown onto, and leave everything empty and unused for several months, and I MIGHT be fortunate enough to be able to start over with a new (his suggestion: hatchery only, vaccinated for the "kitchen sink" approach) flock. There's not a "smiley" sad enough for my broken heart.

Oh dear! I hope that doesn't happen to my flock!

I got 3 RIRs from TSC, so they're vaccinated, right? I suppose my rooster and the new addition werent, the rooster for sure. He was my flockstarter... and was a wild bird. hopefully I got lucky and they will all continue to be healthy!

I tried to quarantine her but I was putting feed and water into the little cage and she flew out in that split second I was shimmying my hand and the waterjug. So I was just like whatever. I didn't know it was so important

Looks like a pretty hen to me, congrats on the new addition!
Here's to following your dreams:D
Mounting is also a form of dominance. Your Roo just wanted to establish the pecking order from the get go. Either that or he couldn't resist the new gals charms!
