Anyone got experience with Humes Bartails?

Am considering to buy a pair and have researched them and they seem like a nice bird to keep. I would love it though if someone with personal experience could chime in about the pros and cons of this species.

Just the same as eliots, very nice birds a little on the nervous side.Keep plenty of cover in their enclosure, this will help keep them calm.Check out www.gbwf.org.
Are you close to Burnaby,BC canada?Harry Hardy has great birds.
In N.H.,Tony.

Am 10 hrs drive from Burnaby. The breeder I am wanting to buy from is up in Edmonton, Alberta(same amount of driving time as to the coast). Seems to have very nice birds, have been contemplating buying from her for years but always found reasons not to. She also has Cheer pheasants which are on my wishlist as well.

I asked her to put my on her list for both of those varieties. Guess I will be building more pens this summer.

An excellent pheasant. Mine are extremely calm until I stand there with my camera. SO my presence just doesn't bother them, as they eat out of my hand, just hate the camera. I think they are less agressive than elliots towards each other and mates. An excellent bird to add to your stock.

thanks kikescove.com!

Humes aren't as much a digger as Cheers, correct? I know the latter I have found several sidenotes saying "loves to dig" and not so with the Humes. Just trying to plan out new pens.

Correct. They don't dig much, though they love their greens. I had to protect the bark on the lilacs I have planted in their pens. They forage around a bit, but don't go to town nearly as much as say Blue eared, Impeyans or Cheer.

Well I will plant berry bushes and roses in their pen for sure. Just decorated my Mandarin pen with 3 dif types of Raspberry bushes and 3 dif colour rose bushes, should look awesome when it all greens up.
Some sort of evergreens would probably be a good addition to a pheasant aviary as well.....

Lilacs aren't poisonous to fowl? Good to know cause we have a huge row of bushes that I can steel some young sprouts from!

one of the best ones I have ever kept as far as all around pleasantness of the species. No not a big digger at all, eareds, impeyans and ones like that , you swear you had hogs in the aviary with them.
Like Tony said, planted aviaries go a long way in keeping them and any species happy, content and less aggressive, though I have never had an aggressive bar tail
Get them,, you'll love them
