I have a Hova bator forced air w/turner for incubating and a LG still air that I use for hatching. I use a saline IV bag to drip water into my HB during incubation. I start the unit up a couple of days before I put my eggs in and fill all the troughs in the bottom of the unit then I lay the tubing into the troughs and set up the drip. One drip every 20 seconds keeps things under control 50-60% RH. I like my hatcher around 65%rh. I never have to open the top.
I also use an inexpensive (relatively) indoor outdoor electronic thermometer w/RH. I stick the outdoor transmitter in the unit and plop the display right on the coffee table.
Lastly I do my hatching in the house and still loosly wrap a couple of fluffy blankets around the incubator to help buffer temp swings in the room. I always leave the top vents open and I put paper towel tubes (8) under the blankets so that there is plenty of air getting to the bottom intake holes.
My first batch this year were a mixed batch from my Buckeye, Ameracauna, Maran flock. These three are Americauna mutts. I'm putting my Buckeyes in the breeding pen this week!
