Ok I just want to start off by saying that I am VERY new to chicken raising. With that said I have a rooster (almost a year old) that someone gave to me because they were not allowed to have him where they lived, so I took him and one other hen that is maybe 3-4 months old, She hasn't started laying yet. Then I also got 4 more hens that are approx. 2-3 months old. The rooster has been very mild mannered up until the last week or so, but as the days get longer and the temperature outside goes up I have noticed him being more and more aggressive. I do allow all of them out of their coop for most of the afternoon everyday. I have noticed that he is most aggressive when they are roaming the yard. Yesterday I saw that one of my younger hens had a big patch of feathers missing off the back of her neck and after further investagation I found the patch of feather that were missing along with a big chunk of her skin on the ground right outside of the coop. This is the first time anything like this happens and I am very concerned. Last night I didn't let him back in the coop with the hens and I am really scared to allow them back together. Please give me some insite on what I need to do!!!

The rooster is trying to mate with the hens. He is jumping on their backs during the free ranging, and by doing so it is possible he has knocked out some feathers. Nothing too serious but if you are truly worried there are these chicken saddle things that help with feather loss. Look it up on www.mypetchicken.com , if that doesn't help then ask your vet
