My Coop
My Coop
I had a Buff orpington setting and blah blah blah she only had one chick
This one chick was raised by her in the coop until she was about Four weeks old then the mother abandoned her it was sad and harsh her being a lonely chick but she took her pecks here and there . Then everyone turned on her , I mean as if she’s a mouse in the flock if they seen her they’d all attack her at once it was horrible! So I put her in a little cage inside the coop where everyone could see her , in a couple of weeks she’s gotten really big so I let her out again and watched , In no time at all it happened again. Usually starting from a peck then she’d chirp or peep and everyone would join in . Ok since then another hen hatched out five babies and she’s starting to leave them on their own and no one cares!!!! So Today I let the single chick out again and watched , within minutes this time for no reason whatsoever a Buff orpington spots her and runs accross the yard like a bee line to attack her and then the whole flock attacks with her ! Why are they doing this?????

Same chicken starting the mayhem each time?

Pull her from the group and see if the same results happen? If not, then you have your answer. Leave her totally isolated for 3-4 days, then reintroduce. She will be focused on climbing the pecking order for a bit.

@Something Cool cool
Nooo that’s what’s so odd about it
At first it was the polish always starting it , now it’s the orpingtons
It’s seriously like almost the entire flock hates her

You know what? I have a similar problem with a chick that was raised solo by a hen. She isn't as violently bullied, but only one chicken besides her mama tolerates her. She manages, but is really neurotic and super skittish (we call her Crazy Bryony for good reason). I wonder if being an only stunted their socialization?

I would think chickens would develop sorta similar to humans, so if they were alone for most of their life they have a bad time socializing. Maybe if you get her a friend, and put them both in a separate area and let them develop their own pecking order, and then reintroduce them both to the flock it might work out better. But, I am not a chicken psychologist and I have no idea if that would work.

well she wasn’t alone she was raised in the flock the entire time but she didn’t have tony ones with her
Yes that is my idea but it’s hard to find chicks I want that’s close to me that’s pullets that’s her age or close lol
But that is my idea at this point

This is just a thought, but I know different kinds of animals (maybe all animals) tend to reject others if there is something wrong with them. That something wrong may not be anything we as humans can see or understand. Often when a mother rejects her young I ask myself, is this an ill equipped mother or is there something wrong with the offspring that we can’t see? Animals have a natural way of dealing with the weaker ones, as callous as it may seem to use humans.

that is true but her mother didn’t reject her until she was five weeks old , which is about standard I believe and even then she wasn’t one that was mean to her
Until now and they all
Seem to be
I just don’t know
