Bought a hen at a flea market that was supposed to be a Barred Rock, but from what I have read online and from the pics I have seen, she looks more like a Cuckoo Maran. She has white legs and her barring is more irregular. So, I was about ready to say she is a Cuckoo. But the thing that confuses me is, her eggs ar not particularly dark. They are a light brown. She may lay some that are darker than others here and there, but for the most part, they are a light brown. Do some Cuckoos lay lighter eggs?

Marans lay dark brown eggs...Super dark. Can you post a picture here for us?

Poorly bred Marans lay lighter brown. If someone was selling her, that could be why. Doens't mean she won't be a wonderful additon, though!!

She may be a marans that does not lay eggs dark enough for her to be considered a true marans or it could be later in her laying cycle when the eggs do tend to lighten up. I'd guess the former since you bought her at an auction. The legs on a barred rock will lighten up as they age too, but since you say the barring is pretty irregular I'd still go with the light egg marans option.

ETA: I type wayyyy too slow.

Appreciate all the advise. Whatever she is, I am not complaining. She is laying 2 or 3 just about everyday. So, she is really cranking them out.

Now I am confused. Are you saying she is laying 2 or 3 eggs a day? That isn't possible. Do you have other chickens? Perhaps she is only laying the dark ones you are getting every so often.

Yeah I don't understand either. It is impossible for a chicken to lay more than one normal egg a day. It takes 26-32 hours to develop an egg from the time she laid the last one.

Where's that flea market??? Because if she's cranking out 2-3 eggs per day I want one of THOSE hens...

I think some others are slipping some eggs in. Or you're being punked...heehee.
