Hi everyone in Chick-land. I live in Eastern Canada and I am relatively new to this forum. I joined a couple of weeks ago when I thought I needed help very quickly. I had set fourteen eggs. One hatched and another died after trying for two days to get out of the shell. Now that's not a very successful hatch by any means, one out of fourteen. I have now constructed a new incubator and I have fifteen banty eggs in there. I am hoping for much better luck this time. Hatch time (I say that with a lot of caution) is May 9th.

I am retired and I do this as a hobby. I just want to keep a couple of banty chicks as pets. In fact two of the grandchildren just came to see (and of course to hold and feel) that one little chick out of those fourteen eggs. We have named the chick Henriette/Henry. As yet we do not know which name will be appropriate. When I was growing up I looked after our hens and chickens all the time. I remember I used to gather enough eggs and set a mother hen. Back then the hatches were always successful because of mother hen. How come I have such a hard time duplicating her success? Oh well, I guess I don't have the skills of a hen!!! But it is really fun to try and great fun watching the chick hatch. I photographed it all the way. I'm still plaqued by the question how come only one hatched? If conditions were right for one how come they were not right for any more. Every egg had full grown chicks in it that obviously had died shortly before hatch time.

I am going to keep up to date with all the goings on in this forum now. Maybe I will learn something that will pay off.

Roary.

from Maine! Sorry I can't help you out; why don't you try the search bar?

from Ohio. So sorry about your hatch. There's no telling what went wrong. Temp, humidity, improper turning, dirty eggs, hens diet and could be just lacking the will to survive. Don't give up, try again. Calibrate your hygrometer before you begin. It might be off. Mine was off by 10.
