Hello. My name is Kristi and I am looking forward to talking with you guys. My husband and I have raised a small flock of backyard chickens for years now. Well now all the children have flown the coop and we only have a rooster and 2 laying hens that are pretty sure they are too tired now. haha. Just in time for the "Egg cost crisis" to hit. Now my grown children are wishing I had more. So...being a good mom, I am stepping back up to the chicken plate. (See what I did there?) Anyway, I am looking to raise some chicks in the spring but meantime am looking to buy some young layers locally but I Can't Find Any! What the heck? When I was in the game I could buy or trade hens easily. Well, this is my call for help. Where have they all gone?

Welcome!
Have you considered buying day old chicks? I believe it's safer to buy chicks from a major hatchery to avoid accidently bringing a nasty disease home.

Avian Influenza caused a lot of the swap meets to close. Craigslist is usually a good place to look, or post WTB adds. If you add your location to your profile, we can help you better. The answer differs some depending on where you live. There's also a State thread on here if you're in the USA.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

It may be a tough year finding chicks what with what's going on in the chicken world, hatcheries are going to sell out soon. Check out our Buy Sell and Trade section here on BYC, (bottom of the BYC forum list), local craigs list, 4H Clubs and Poultry Clubs.

Good luck and welcome aboard!
