My first introduction to chickens was last February (2020) when I purchased 5 Buff Orpington chicks for by backyard. I raised them in the house in a fenced area until they were fully feathered and ready for the big outdoors! I spent a lot of time with them, spoiling them rotten and was rewarded with chickens that want to spent time with me, hanging out in my lap and following me around.
My husband and I built a larger coop this spring. It is a 4’x8’ coop raised up on 2’ high legs with a skirt around the bottom for protection from sun, rain, wind and occasional snow. They love it in there! The coop is in a dog run chain link enclosure with a chain link roof for protection from hawks.
I have a fairly large vegetable garden that the chickens benefit from. They get fresh organic greens daily.
I found BYC while searching for many topics relating to chick rearing and multiple newbie questions I had.
