Okay, so the I am pretty sure the bugs are fleas. How do I make sure I get rid of all of them in the coop before they get anyone else. Please help I don't want to lose another of my girls. :0( I know a lot of people say seven dust but, the bottle is so small and I have a large coop. Is there anything that is really affective, won't hurt my birds and I can buy in bulk?

So what all do I need to do to make sure we are pest free. I really don't want to go through this again, watching what my little Lulu has gone through has absolutely broke my heart.

What a pretty girl. This is my Lulu.

diatomaceous earth I hear I suppose to be real good for fleas and other bugs... You can put it in your bedding dust your chickens with it sprinkle a little in the chicken feed to help prevent worms and such... It also helps give myour cckens lusterous feather... I buy mine at whole foods comes in a bucket get it for around 7 dollars here. You should be able to find it at any other health food stores.

Is it chemicals? Do you know what it is? Is it still safe to eat the eggs. Will it get rid of fleas if you already have some or is it just for prevention. Thanks so much for your response. How big is the bucket? I hope huge my coop is kind of big. How often do you put it in your bedding and dust your birds?

dietomacious earth is completely chemical free. It is made from ground pumice I believe. It kills the bugs by stabbing them, but the peices are very tiny.

The lack of chemicals makes everything about it completely safe.

Here's some info about chicken parasites:

http://ohioline.osu.edu/vme-fact/0018.html

DE is the ground fossilized shells from ancient diatoms. A lot of people report little or no effect using it for an active infestation. You may need to bring out the big guns- Sevin 5%, poultry dust/permethrin, frontline, or Ivermectin. You will need a complete cleaning and treatment of the coop, as well as a treating the chickens.
I'm not sure what you mean by the Sevin coming in a little bottle. Is it liquid? I bought some powder at the garden center- it is 1.5 lbs (large container) of dust. more than enough to treat the coop, my house, and the neighbors. It was on sale. I paid about $2.75, It was regularly $6.99.
I believe that there is no withdrawal time for the external dusts, no idea about the Ivermectin or frontline, haven't used them.

Hope this helps,

Imp

Thanks for the help. I meant Sevin 5%. My husband picked it up and it was a very small container. I guess I will try to find some and look a gallon and a half. I didn't realize they sold them in that size. I have already treated with it some but probably not good enough. So I need to bath and dust every bird. Wow, that is gonna be fun I have about 20 birds.

Thanks I will definitely use that on a regular basis once I get things under control. So it is also safe for birds to eat? Some people suggested that to help prevent worms.
