Up to yesterday, the roo was a little forceful in mating, but nothing serious. Today, he was chasing one particular hen and she was screaming like she was being attacked. well a little while ago I went into the coop and spotted him trying not to mate with teh hen but actually attack her as she hid under the nesting boxes. He's in a dog kennel in the brooder barn right not by the way. I pulled her out from under the nesting boxes and he has flayed her neck open almost completely around, over half of her neck skin is ripped off and her muscle and bone exposed. I doubt she lives the night, but if so I'll baby her to give her a fighting chance. Not much more I can do tonight after cleaning and removing him from the coop.

He has a date with teh killing cone tomorrow, as I will not put up with a roo who is violent to his girls. Period!

And all this after almost being finished with their new breeding coop, which would have taken them from 12 ft of floor space per bird to 48 ft per with attached run.

My second rooster chases after the hens when he does the mating dance and they don’t get down to mate. I don’t personally have the problem where the rooster is raping the hen, but I was wondering if you have 2 roosters or even more because that sounds like the behavior of the non-dominant rooster. Pretty much happens when hens don’t want to mate with him he gets pissed off.

No this is a breeding group I have been getting eggs from to incubate. While it is one of the smaller groups, I knew more hens were needed and have 6 more to go into the group in another 2 months when they begin laying. It was also a new group, only laying for the past 6 weeks.

More space might have helped.
More females...maybe.
But a bad bird is a bad bird.
How old is he?
Were there other males present?

No other males present anywhere near this pen. It's one of the few here at the house instead of up at the farm. He is 7 months old and the second roo I got from this hatch is at teh farm and a real gentleman. It could be because when they started fighting I took him to the farm and placed him in with the layers (they are 2 year old hens) and they did not put up with any shenanigans. the only true reason these never made it to the farm and the big runs and coop is because mom likes to watch them when she eats or sits outside and since she is recovering from open heart surgery with complications, I placed the coop and run in the garden for her.

Somehow I lost my own thread. Anyway, she is in the brooder barn and in one of the 2x4 brooder pens, she is drinking and I've seen her peck somewhat at teh food, but have not seen her actually eat. I'm using microcyn wound hydrogel several times a day on the wound, more like an avulsion really, to try to keep the muscle moist.

The rooster is still in the dog cage with food and water as I've been too busy to deal with him. I'm tempted to toss him in the layer pen with the older birds, but fear they will kill him if he tries to be rough with them. Those Brahma Momma's don't put up with any S*&^t.
