A couple of weeks ago we found evidence of a horrendous cat fight in the shop where our barn cat stayed. We don't recognize the other cat's fur color at all. Right afterwards it was clear that "Chopper" was injured and hiding out. We could tell where he was because of our dogs alerting here and there. We weren't able to catch him though. He seemed to be better and we started to see him around again. He was eating the food we put out. But the day before yesterday i heard him meowing from one of his previous hiding places in some tall grass. He wouldn't come at all. This morning my husband said he was worried because he thought he saw a dead animal over there. He checked and it was poor Chopper. I am so sad. I actually never wanted a cat but he was here when we moved in and I was fond of him. Poor little guy.

Sorry to hear about Chopper.

We have had many barn and feral cats over the years, and sometimes they just disappeared, sometimes we found them or parts of them, or traces of them.

With barn cats, as with everyone sent our way, we just do the best we can for them, and that's all anyone can do. Cats live a sort of solitary life, mostly. If they choose to transition to the house, sometimes you can do a bit more for them. But if they are outdoor cats, then they have a dangerous life. But it's a cat's life, and I wouldn't be the one to tell them to give it up and live as a house cat, if they don't want to.

Still, we miss them when they are gone, don't we? I can name dozens of ours, and a few that have no names, only what they looked like and when they were here. All of us God's creatures, and all of us temporary.
