I am trying to define what it means to have lethal genes in the Manchurin gold Coturnix.

I have purchased a dozen eggs and plan to keep these and sell some jumbo browns I will be hatching too. Should I not breed the gold to gold but keep a brown Roo? Our will the color come thru better with a Gold roo and brown hens? OY VEY. It makes me head hurt!

http://www.hpbaa.com/Manchurian_Golden.html So I read this. But it does not tell me what I need to know. Which is. If I breed a jumbo brown to the jumbo manchurin gold will I still get the Manchurin gold chicks but without the deadly genetic issue with the hatch rate? And what might the percentage be?

Feel like smaking me yet?

Okay, I read it and I understand it to mean that Manchurian + Manchurian = 25% unviable eggs, 25% pharoah (brown), and 50% Manchurian chicks. So it is not lethal to the chicks after they hatch, it is only lethal to the unviable eggs.

If you pair a Manchurian with a Pharoah, it will not matter which is male or female because the yellow gene is not sex linked. (I think)

I guess this yellow gene business also affects Italian speckled?

So which if either would be dominant if matched brown to yellow? I do not think the Italian Speckled are the same. But I could be wrong. I just got my first Coturnix this Spring. The gene pool in Alaska is slim AND they are all mixed up. Most of the hatches come out Tibetan and Tibetan Tuxedo. And I want to be able to tell what is what to sell before I feed them all for 6 weeks. We have eaten a few, but being tiny little ones it was not much to eat. These Jumbo should be some of the first here and I intend to keep breeding only the largest to keep a good sized Coturnix locally. I ordered 24 Jumbo Brown from A hatchery and these from Stellar. I am pretty excited. My husband thinks I am nuts. I brood in a playpen in my office.......

I think the golden hens are prettier than all of the others. So maybe I will put them with the brown male. Or I could build another tractor and try it both ways?

I have a beautiful standar roo, he is not as dark as the pharoah. But not as light as the Roux color. With these Tuxedos he throws Tibetan Tuxs. I would love to maybe put him in with white hens and see what happens. Problem is I have no idea what his color lineage is

I know people that have true manchurians and no lethal genes...

and inbreeding stock causes "lethal genes" ( eta- a % of stock will not hatch), imho...

The pharoah chicks from your Manchurian x Manchurian cross will be genetically regular Pharoahs because they have no yellow gene. Those chicks with one yellow gene are Manchurian. Eggs with two yellow genes won't hatch -- these are the 25% nonviable eggs.

If you mate pharoahs from your hatch with the Manchurians from the same hatch, you will completely exclude the Tibetan genetics. Your next generation will be pharoahs and manchurians, but I'm not sure of the mix.

Alexandra, come and help us!

This is what I am trying to understand. I have read that golden is dominant over brown but I do not know if that is right. If so then the cross of Manchurin to brown would yeild all Manchurin with no lethal gene. Right? Is Manchurin the same as golden?

I am hoping to minimize inbreeding by getting stock from different areas. I hope it helps.

Yes, me too, and I do also agree with you, laserterlas, that getting stock from breeders located in widely separated places is a good approach in minimizing inbreeding... But also ask some questions as to the history of the stock from each producer regardless of where they live...

My jumbo browns are coming from Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and the Machurians from Stellar who is in Florida. If I go with others I will shoot for hatcheries in the west. For now with only 12 weeks till snow I will call it good.
