I Can't Do This Anymore!!! Thor's Ship Sailed.

I can't go thru another winter of chicken drama. I need solutions FAST!!!

I have 10 Cochin hens, one who is setting, one who the Roo (brahma) is trying to get busy with and she has a headache. Her comb is now bleeding, and she is vulnerable for attack. I have taken care of her the best I can following advice from BYC. I have another who has a huge scab under her wing. That I just noticed this morning. It is healing, no swelling, redness or sign of infection. I will keep an eye on it.

I am under the impression something needs to be done with Thor, but what? Freezer camp, beak trim, nails trimmed, peepers.......What???? I have no problem with any of these. Right now Thor is outside the pen/coop, free ranging it. The only problem is it is 10* out.

HELP!!!! PLEASE!!!!

I don't want cannibal chickens. I do want babies though.

Roos get a bit wild when they do their thing, but not all are like Thor. I'd look for a new roo. Thor sounds like he might prefer to live under lemon sauce or paprika.

Have you tried a hen saddle? I know it won't help the comb issue, but maybe the other.

Is Thor just young and enthusiastic right now, possibly? I didn't see if you posted how old he is.

I wouldn't be able to stand my girls getting torn up, so the rooster would have to go if he was mine. Roosters are easy to come by, and I wouldn't settle for one unless he was at least somewhat gentlemanly with my hens.

Do you just have one roo? If so, I would section the hen that is setting on eggs off. Do you have any portable cages? I would make her a nice nest in a separate cage/area and move her eggs to that space(with food and water as well). I wouldn't cull him just yet and I would get him back in the pens--that's too cold(chickens generate body heat from each other). I have moved hens and their nests successfully with no problems. anyway you can dog crate him for a bit.. till you can build him his own bachelor pad.. then when you let them out in the spring they can get away if need be..
