I will soon be getting 6 sussex chickens a cockeral and 5 hens. Does anybody know the cheapest place to source hens and roosters near Herefordshire in the uk? If not I will have to get my birds online. Another question I have is red mite. About three years ago we got a free coop and it was full of red mite and there is nothing I could do. We tried spraying it with kerosene and even that didn't work. I want a list of natural homemade remedies for red mites. I think neem oil would work from what I've read. Do you think it would be worth trying? To my knowledge neem oil kills most bugs

Hello, and welcome to BYC! :frow Good luck finding Sussex’s! :jumpy

Neem oil can kill mites, but as with a lot of natural things it would take more time and consistency for it to work best. Once I tried using neem oil for my chickens, because they had mites on themselves. The oil worked but it didn’t get all of them so I did a couple treatments with it. (Along with doing a bath first with Dawn dish soap) I would have had to been consistent with it to have worked completely. I just got tired of doing it and got some permethrin powder and used that. It worked like a charm and I only had to do it twice, the first time and then a week or so after that.

Hello Brad, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Permethrin is good for killing poultry mites. You'd need to soak every single surface of the coop paying particular attention to joints where wood meets wood. And you would have to do a second treatment about 10 days after the first one to kill off the mites that hatch from the eggs that cannot be killed with the spray.
