My DH is bottling his homebrew tonight so i decided i should also mark a milestone and tried candling my Welsummer eggs. It's been 5 days, so i thought I might be able to see something. I did! It was so exciting. I marked the iffy ones and i will candle again in a couple of days, but i have to say that was so exciting. I am so hooked now.
i couldn't wait...so i cheated and candled early!

If you don't see anything, it doesn't mean they weren't fertile, you would have to open them to be able to tell that...it means they didn't develop.

Absolutely! I always give the person a heads up on what i've found, could be they don't even know... I recently hatched some chicks where one particular color out of the mix did not develop at all, the breeder was greatful to know that she might have an issue in that pen.

How do you "candle" an egg?
Just a heads up because someone was kind enough to tell me.
Candeling too often can hurt them embryo especially early on. The heat can get too hot and kill it.
If I am candeling alot of eggs the bulb does get hotter. And if it is difficult to view and you take extra time looking, then the egg is getting hotter.
Also it makes the eggs lose "precious humidity" . I am learning to restrain my self until at least day 7 preferably day 10 Then you can really see them.

To candle an egg, there is a very good "stickie" to open up at the top of this forum that will help you to understand.
It takes practice to understand what you are seeing if you candle early. By day 10 you pretty much can tell one way or another. Even in the dark eggs if you have a good candler.

It is day 7 today and i started candling on day 2, saw something everytime i candle
