One thing you can do once you put in the deep litter, dig random holes, add some scratch and bury it, leaving a little over the area you buried it.
Boy, mine need no encouragement to dig holes.....tho I do spread scratch grains daily, not sure that's why they dig where they dig.

Put some boards or pavers out, then flip them over every couple days, bugs will have gathered under them.

Mine tend to dig next to run walls and or concrete blocks and pavers.

Speaking of 'sod', whenever I edge the patio or garage apron...or deepen the drainage trench...I toss the chunks of sod from that into the run, usually filling holes they've dug.
