You could build up the ground in the area by adding a couple of yards of sand. It would drain well. It won't be so hard for the chickens to dig through. I have stone dust in the run. It packs down hard after a rain, but the girls dig it up easily. It is nice for the elevation of the ground to prevent the formation of puddles in the run.
