I feel so bad....

I took an egg out from under a broody because it had a small puncture from what looks like a toenail. A slight amount of yellow yoke was seeping as well. When I cracked it open it was fertile, it made me so sad. I was wondering if I had left it under the hen it would have hatched even though it had a crack in it. btw it had been 5 days old.

I just did the same thing with an egg that had a small hole in it. I don't think they will hatch if they are broken at all. I think bacteria and germ get inside. I still have 6 eggs left under my hen. Hope you have a few more under yours. I am on day 11. 10 more days of waiting, Waiting,waiting.

If they have holes in that go through the membrane i dont think they will hatch if it is just a hair chack on the outer shell then you might have a chance. Dont feel bad i would look at is as if you had helped it for not going any further also if the yoak was comeing out it would not have been to good for it i dont think.

That makes me feel better. I do still have 7 more eggs of the same breed and 4 others of my own. I still have 16 more days it is driving me crazy, but i am sooo excited, it is my very first hatch.

You did the right thing. Bacteria would have killed the embryo and created a worse problem if you hadn't removed it from the nest.
