I really wanted a house-chicken that I was going to litter train and everything, so I got a pair of day-old EE pullets in the hope that one would be pet material(1 of them might be).
In the meanwhile though, one of the 4-week-old straight run gold-laced wyandotts I got for craft feathers/meat has wormed its way into my heart. It's such a sweetie, always first to come up to me for treats and scratches, sits on my lap and watches TV with me, climbs up on my shoulder and makes adorable chuckling noises...
I named it Rue, since I have a feeling that's what this is all going to end in.
We aren't supposed to have chickens at all, there's no way I can keep a rooster in the suburbs secret.

Is 4 weeks too young to tell?

i would wait a little longer to tell… its combs and wattles are certainly a darker reddish color that usually means roo, but not always. did the place you got it from say it was a pullet? you could try testing weather its a hen or a roo by using the Hat Test?

It's straight run, I wanted roosters as well as hens for feathers so I didn't care to get the more expensive pullet chicks for them.
It's a lot lighter colored than the other GLWs I got and grew its' feathers in slower, but the back feathers didn't lag behind in developing like my old australorp rooster did so maybe it just came from a different hen from the others(there were 50 of them in the bin after all)?
It's not flighty like the others(they're the most wild chicks I've gotten out of 6 different breeds, the rest won't even take treats from my hands), it's just... Lazy, I guess. Not quite as outgoing and curious as the rest, but also very laid back. While the others are digging around in the leaves this one lays in the sun and 'talks' to me. It doesn't fight with the others as often either.

It doesn't seem unhealthy though, just no where near as active as the others. It doesn't do that awful scream/cheeping when its alone either.

I guess I'll try taking more pictures in a few weeks and keep working with the more friendly EE pullet as a backup... If it is a roo, hopefully someone out there will want him for something other than lunch, I couldn't bear to eat this one.

Aw he sounds like a very nice little chick. And I know what you mean about wanting a good home for him that won't eat him- I just hatched a bunch of chicks, and turns out every single one of them is a roo ):

rooster, look at his saddle feather they are pointed if it were a hen they would be more rounded.

Well I think it is a roo Gold Lace Wyandotte. I have 2 Silver Wyandotte Hens & 2 Glod Lace Wyandotte Hens. And they are all 1 year old. I need a Roo about the same age. But good luck!
