when do chickens usually start laying, ball park? mine are 23 days old. i don't have the nest box in yet. i'm wondering when i should put the nest box in.

18 - 20 weeks old!! You've got plenty of time!!

It takes about 20 weeks on the average, but some breeds take bit longer--sometimes up to 25 weeks.
