A little background, I am almost 34 weeks pregnant with a toddler. I have been doing the bare minimum to care for my chickens and haven’t collected eggs as well as normal. So I’m not surprised at all that a baby chick was hatched. I don’t know if there is more. I can’t go out and do anything until my boyfriend gets home and can watch the toddler. It is down in the run but the nesting boxes are up in the coop so I’m worried it fell. But it doesn’t seem to be injured if it did. My rooster seems completely uninterested in it so I’m not worried about it being harmed by him. What do I need to do? Do I just put the chick back up in the coop and the mama will take it back? I used medicated feed for them when they were chicks and thought I’d do that with future chicks I got/were hatched. Is that bad with the adults in the coop? Am I not able to do that? This will be my first chicks that my hens hatched and I’m incredibly excited just not sure what to do since mama hen can do more for them.

I just went out and looked in the nest boxes and I don’t see any others. All the hens are in the run with the chick so I’m really not sure who is the mama. I plan to have my boyfriend clean out the coop and we’ll remove all the eggs. I will also get better at collecting them which shouldn’t be too bad since I need to provide fresh food and water every morning for the chick.

Make sure you candle all of the eggs before pulling them to be sure no others are developing/hatching. I'd probably just pull the chick and raise it separately. Or sell it or give it away if you don't want to deal with that. If the mom isn't guarding it and taking care of it it'll get killed.

Thank you for suggesting candling! I honestly hadn't thought about doing that. It appears to be a little older than I originally thought. But it definitely has a mom taking care of it. I have a different hen sitting on a nest and hadn't noticed this one on a nest but she is definitely protective of the chick and spending all of her time with it.
