I can't believe some of my chickens are already laying! I have recieved two of the cutest little eggs from a couple of leghorns this morning. I have a problem how do I get them to lay in a box and not on the ground by a tree? I have one rooster and am getting another in a few days, how do I encourage my chickens at some point in the future to become broody? Is there a specific breed I need to get or is it just the indiviual bird?

19 week old leghorns and I also have silver laced and black australorp and one ee the same age.

ok I know this probably sounds weird but I don't lock the birds up at night. They perch on goats hay feeder, they perch on the fences, they perch anywhere all night long. I keep a mini donkey in the pen with them and there are geese and outside of the pen is our welsh pony. I have never lost a bird yet

So they are all over. My older hens lay in the 3 houses that I have for them.
