Two side by side pens.
The main difference is that the first pen has a pen on each side of it (but thats just chicken wire) whereas the second pen's outside wall is open air (horse fence). The pens are connected & the birds free range during the day so they can sleep literally wherever they want. I just took away some 2x4 flat roosts so they stop pooping on them and this is how they rearrange themselves.

And its not that pen 1 chickens hate pen 2 chickens. Pen 1 is always less full but the birds themselves sleep in different places all the time, including switching up which pen they're in.
