You know, everything is going fine Im out feeding my chickens when all of a sudden 4 week old orpington GIRL dubbed Lianna (that we have been iffy on) dose something that makes me wonder, I sware that GIRL tried to crow! It was one of the deepest most intentional sounds I have heard them make to date! So Liana may very well be a Leon! Hoping that she was just trying out her adult girl voice.........I allready have too many boys so that means I will have to send away another bird :'( waa I am already sooo attached to all of them :'(
hmmmmmmm.......:)

Same here. We have 7 roos we aren't going to eat and can't part with. We currently have 2 bachelor pads (one with 2 roos and one with 3 roos. All were raised with their respective bunk mates). But there will probably be a 3rd bachelor pad coming as the other 2 cockerels are only just babies, still growing with their sisters. Once they establish the pecking order, it's pretty quiet. Might be a skirmish here or there but overall our roosters live together quite well.

The best way I have learned to tell if my chicks are a roo is their voice when they get scared. If htey aren't used to being handled and run & squawk when you go to pick them up, the girl still tweet, the roos... sound like a rusty bike or the hose when you pull the handle for the sprayer. You know, that scratchy, hoarse noise they make, lol.

We already have too many "yard" roosters, so my fiance & I send our roos to the base yard in Kihei. They live with a flock, they get fed everyday, there are TONS of bugs (that's Maui for ya) they have a HUGE area to make their own & it doesn't get cold at night. Unfortunately, the only reson they are safe is because the cats just go for the little ones. The newly hatched. It's sad. But, the cats always kill the rats as well, so...
