Like everyone here, I am a huge animal lover. And my girls (and 1 roo) are about 8 weeks old, and living temporarily in a horse stall. We have chicken wire over the top of the stall, but for the 4 weeks they've been down there, everything has been fine. But just in case, DH had setup a live trap in front of the stall door. Well last night after work I went down there to feed everyone, and there was a coon in the cage. I feel awful killing any animals... but I know he would have gladly killed my girls. So I dispatched DH to take care of the old coon.

I am quite pleased though that we still had the trap there. We almost took it down, thank goodness we didn't. I guess we'll set it again and see what else shows up.

We did have it set in the barn before my girls went down there because something kept tearing open our feed bags... so to date we've had 3 groundhogs, 2 raccoons, and 1 giant rabbit (the rabbit got let go of course).

I'm glad to hear that the raccoon didn't get to your chicks!

I haven't had any problems yet in the chicken coop, which I have set up pretty close to the house, but DF found a bunch of coons out by the pig pen a couple nights ago...

I have a "wanted poster" near my coop. We have lots of coons, but one that lives in the maple tree tries to get in my dog run. I know it wont be long before he tries for the coop.
They are very dangerous animals, and carry rabies. So don't feel bad.

Had a friend of mine who wasn't too bright pick up a baby coon. It's momma nearly removed his arm (my friends) getting her baby back.

I've done my share of backpacking and seen a good deal of bears. After what I saw that coon do to his arm, I'd rather face a bear!!!!!
