I have a fenced in yard, i have 2 yorkies....My question is....we have never had a problem with cayotes....but the dogs are both 4 pounds each, and am i going to be attracting more preditors if I put a chicken coop in my backyard?? should i be concerned??

do you live in an area where coyotes are a problem,I have a yorkie, but he is a house dog, and the chicken free range, I do shut them up in a good coop at night so have never had a problem with predators. We sometimes see a hedge hog or a cat, but my pitt runs them off. ask some one in your area if you have coyotes. marrie

WILL HAVING CHICKENS BRING ON MORE ATTENTION, BEING THEY ARE GOING TO BE OUT IN THE COOP?? CAYOTES I THINK ARE EVERYWHERE, BUT HAVENT HEARD OF A PROBLEM IN MY AREA?? I LIVE IN CAPE COD MASS

Coyotes are very clever and they take domestic cats and dogs all the time. How good is your fencing? I think the smell of chickens might be tempting enough for them to try to go under a fence. If a yorkie went after them the yorkie would be toast.

This tread might belong in the predators and pests category.

Yes, please heed the warnings of the other folks. I lost a yorkie to what I thought was a hawk once - now I have to wonder as I'm learning we're having coyote problems in my neighborhood

Coyotes are known to 'play with' dogs, lure them away, and then attack them via pack to kill them. They can scale most fences, even tall chainlink. Dogs and coyotes can bite through chicken wire but have a harder time biting through welded wire.

Your yorkies won't protect against coyotes (except maybe barking, as they're so good at that heheh.) They need to be protected against coyotes.

Also while you're doing predator protection, build against raccoons too. They're devestating.

Yes your pups will be in danger. The coyotes are mostly out at night but can be seen sometimes in the day. poor Hallie Berry (spelling?) had her two small dogs inside a fenced yard and went to the grocery and they were both dead when she got back. :(She saw the coyote in the fence with them.

Our yorkies are small, they are never out unsupervised. I worry about hawks during the day, and owls and coyotes during the night time. All of which will come right up to your house.

OHH MY...NOW IM FREAKING...i DONT WANT MY DOGS TO BE IN DANGER THEY ARE MY BABIES...NOW I AM RE THINKING THE CHICKEN THING, I JUST DONT KNOW?? YIKES...

Oh well, it has nothing to do with the chickens whatsoever. Just the fact that they are small prey looking animals is enough. I'm sure that there are mice, voles, birds, rabbits, and other things that the hawks, owls, and coyotes are already ranging around looking for. Just supervise your small dog if you live in an area with predators.
