i Have a HUGE silkie, the chicks we ordered r here! pics added pg 8..

I'm interested in breeding some giant silkies myself. Don't know where to get larger silkies to start with. I've got a self-blue silkie rooster in with a large Brahma hen, I've heard that in a couple generations I can get some large silkie-types from that cross....

I have a Blue Standard Silkie project in the works ....

Would like to do more colors but dont have the pens to create another color at this time.

I am thinking on the 4th or 5th generation , hopefully i will see some really nice ones .

As i make progress i will share pics .

Awesome ,glad to hear others are trying to create a standard silkie as well. I would like to see pics of your progress as you go if you wouldnt mind sharing . I was thinking of using a Brahma for my project but unfortunately i dont have a Brahma ,so i would deffinately like to see the differences of our crosses.

You would be better off using a cochin rather than a brahma.

I agree..
Brahmas would through you all off.
If you look at a lot of the U.K. "large Fowl" Silkies they sort-of have that Cochin body to them..

Thanks all for the advice ! That makes me feel better because thats what i started with (Standard Black Cochins x Splash silkie Roo.)

A Silkied Cochin would have been awesome but i dont have one and didnt know where to get my hands on a standard one.

I set my first eggs today from my buff Brahma hen and my self-blue silkie roo. I chose the Brahma because I actually have a Brahma. She's the last of a small group I bought last year. I was going to sell them all at a fur and feather swap, but took this one out of the sale pen because I thought she might be getting sick and didn't want to sell a possibly sick bird.

I thought the Brahma would be a good breed because they have nice personalities and they lay better than Cochins (or so I've heard). I may try some other crosses as time goes on just for the heck of it.
