Hi ! i was wondering if cayuga hens have the same green color as the drakes do! it is beautiful and i am ordering my ducklings this weekend and i would love to have a cayuga with a nice emerald color! i am getting 4 other ducks and i am considering also getting a male ancona and a female ancona . should i just get one drake and 5 hens or would it be okay to have 2 drakes sharing 4 hens? I am not going to have them have ducklings i am going to collect the eggs they are just going to be pets! but i have heard that drakes will fight over the hens and you need to have a good amont of hens to have more than one drake.
do you think four hens is enough for 2 drakes? thank you!

I can't say I've noticed a greeni-ish tint on the heads of my Cayuga hens. Slight if anything. I'd stick with 1 drake over 4-6 hens, or you run the risk of the drakes fighting and/or hurting and possibly killing the hens while mating.

Mine have the greenish, blueish, purpleish tint all over their body just not as pronounced as the Drake. The thing with the females is that they turn white as they age. I would also stick with one drake. But if you are not planning on raising offspring I wouldn't get a boy at all. You don't need a drake for the hens to lay.

Well I might want to breed my anconas, but I was deciding because I don't think the male will only stay with the female Ancona and I was worried they may still fight ! Thank you guys :D !

I love my cuyoga, his temperment is so sweet and he's the protector of the flock..if a fight breaks out he chases the agressor away and peace is restored. I love the breed so much, i've ordered some more eggs to hatch. I just hatched some runners and ancona's..

I have 4 Cayuga straight run ducklings. I am a little nervous about male to female ratio.....what do I do if I have to many drakes?? I only wanted females but our local store only sells them as the straight run....

Depending on the number of drakes you might either have to cull a few or give them away, at least that's what I would do.

In my experience Cayugas are wonderful birds. My Cayuga is the sweetest, most gentle and quietest bird in the flock. She also has the best temperament of any of the birds I have. She does have a green sheen to her, but I'll echo what other people have said before me that the females generally don't have as much of a green sheen as the males do.

I love Cayugas - I have a flock of them as part of my entire flock of poultry. I had a pair of call duck I hatched a couple of years ago when I lived somewhere else, but the female disappeared after the move. So my little call drake has bonded with one of the largest Cayuga hens; they are such a funny pair! She has the most white feathers of the females. (One of the reasons I am glad Elvis bonded to a Cayuga - his first wife was LOUD!)

Cayugas are gorgeous and a fairly quiet breed. I call them my Ninja Stealth ducks.

I have too many drakes for the number of ducks, though. :/
