hello everyone! My name is Alanea and I'm really, really trying to convince my family to get chickens. My husband is against it. He said that he had once lived next door to chickens and they were noisy an awful.

Well, I lived next door to chickens as well and was never bothered a bit.

I have four kids and I am trying to live a more wholesome and organic lifestyle. Raising chickens is right up my alley! I have a huge back yard and I am ready to go. I just want to have all the knowledge necessary before I begin. I would hate to lose chicks out of ignorance.

But I also live in AZ and I am trying to figure out the laws for having chickens in a city. Unfortunatley I really dont understand the double talk of the city ordinanaces. So I'm not even sure it's okay for me to have them.

Anyways, any and all help in the arena of laws, how-to's and convincing family and neighbors that chickens are a good idea are welcome.

Thanks for having me!

Alanea

I'm in the northern part of Phoenix. I can have 20 chicks here? Holy cow! I was thinking like, 5... lol.

Stipulations. They cannot free range and must be in an enclosed coop/run. If the coop is within 80 feet of another residence, you need their written permission.

Excellent! I think I could get that. My neighbors are pretty cool. I dont think I'll get hubby's written permission... but when do I ever lol.

Thanks for all of the welcomes guys. Everyone was right, this place is cool.

My recommendation:

Click on index (upper right hand corner) then any forum that looks like it might be of interest, including FAQ and rain=sing baby chicks. Check out the stickies at the top of each. Also check out the learning center.

There is an incredible amount of info on this site.

Good luck!

Try quail! I love mine and they're so quiet that my neighbor convinced her chicken hater husband to let her get some too;)

Yes! you are right about alot of info! I'm reading and reading and cant seem to find the botttom lol!

I'm happy to be here and I love all the schooling. I sooo needed this.

I'm glad to have a place to learn before and during the raising of my chicks.

Thanks guys!

Hmmmm.... let me try this again. tried to post and lost it.

But anyways... Quail? thats cool. I see them running around outside all the time. What do their eggs taste like. My kids are picky. Of course they would get used to it in time, but the transition period would be odd lol.
