My Coop
My Coop
I bought one of these last month. It has now been retro-fitted to be a coop and a run has been added (10'x6'). The last thing I need to add is a roost.

My question is this: How much head room do my chickens (Barred Rocks) need once they are full grown? They are only 11 days old right now, but we're getting everything ready! I'm so excited!!!

Thanks, guys!

I think in ours, our roosts are about 3 feet from the bottom and the hens (full size) have plenty of overhead room. We have a roost on each side, front door to back wall.

I checked my Lowe's this morning to see if they had any more of these, and of course they didn't. But I sure would like to find one.

I would love to see pictures of yours!!

Chickens like to roost up high so give them as much headroom as possible.

My chickens roost in a 3.5ft high area of my barn under a bench.

I don't really understand what you are saying in your subject line but I hope this
answers your question.

As long as you don't put it too high over the top of the window level you should be OK. I want to see! We are customizing ours now as a flex duck/chicken coop.

Sorry, guys!
Here are some pictures - I meant to put them with my post this morning and got sidetracked.........ohhhhhh! Shiney object!

Here is the Lowe's Playhouse/Chicken coop before being retro-fitted for chickens:

Yesterday and today my husband and I made the following changes to the coop:
*covered the insides of the windows (and all gaps...ie between the roof and the walls) with 1/2" hardware cloth.
*made a floor of plywood and covered it with linoleum (for ease of cleaning).
*hung the roost 3 feet off the floor.
*hung one nest box (18" off the floor)
*Put the entire house up on 2' "stilts" so as not to take up floor space in the run, give them a place to get away from the rain (if they aren't smart enough to go inside the coop), as well as to make a place for the food and water to go and be protected from the rain (nearly every day here!)
*Put the dog-run we bought for the chickens around the coop.

We still have to cover the top of the run with chicken wire, and we're going to do the same thing on the floor - to make good and sure it is predator proof!

Now I wish I'd taken pictures to show you guys - but I was exhausted by the time we were done! I'll take some tomorrow :)

Can you put 20 barred rocks in there ? If so I am Soooooo buying one !

It might take some very serious skill with tetris - and you KNOW I want to try!!!!

I've only had my barred rocks for 5 days, and I LOVE them!

hey wouldn't it be cute if you lifted the lid of the mailbox to get the eggs? just dreaming, there seems to be absolutely no way to get one of those playhouses here in the middle of Michigan-- if your Lowe's doesn't carry them you can't get one shipped there--- catch 22
