I have two hens, one is around 5, and the other is 2. They have fluid gathering in what feels like their abdomen, or lung area, and when we put gentle pressure on them, the fluid comes rushing out their mouths. I've been giving antibiotics for two days, but I'm not sure it's helping. Mini, the younger one feels very heavy, bottom heavy to be exact - while Tanya feels light as a feather. I suppose they could have different things, but I rarely have ill chickens, I assumed it was the same thing. Both are listless, laying about, and it looks like they are squeezing their vent muscles when they are laying down? Not sure how to describe it...

I'm so worried whatever this is could spread to the other girls...do you think I should dose the flock for 5-7 days then dump eggs for a couple of weeks? Any advice would be helpful. I don't expect either of my sick girls to make it through the day, and I need to figure out what is happening.

Thanks - Lynn

Give us the following information. The more you tell us, the better we will be able to help you.

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use

Fill out the form for each bird to give us the best info.
