I just got started in raising chickens

Ok, here's a question...my "chicks" are now about 8 or 9 weeks old...how do I know if they are hens or roosters? And, I am in NJ, it's been getting quite chilly at night here...are they ok outside with no light now? The temp can get to like 32 at night. Thanks for the help
