I just lost over 12 Bantam Chickens Saturday night not sure what to do

Hey I know where Pungo is!!!!!!! That's my old stomping grounds, Sandbridge, Backbay Wildlife refuge, False Cape State park.

Shooting or trapping are your best bets, electric fence will also work. Is it still deer season in VA? Ask your local hunters is they have seen it and where they have seen it. If a food source is good it will hang around the area and you might be able to pattern it and get a shot.

Thank you matthewschickens for that link which cleared up a lot of confusion for me on the electric fences. I sent the link to my hubby so he can look at it as well! This might be something we can do! Thank you!

We live in the middle of 10's of thousands of acres of National Forest and Wilderness lands in Northern California. Bear, Mountain Lion, Coyote, Fox, Racoon, Skunk, Ring Tailed Cat, Fisher and many other of weasal family as well as hawks, falcons, osprey and eagles. (Actually found the eagles the most confounding). When you have such a good food source like chickens you will have some hungry critter do it's best to eat them. The best word of advise is a serious fence. We have about 2 acres fenced with 2X4 X 5 ft. field fencing as well as a smaller more controllable cross fenced area near the Chicken house with its closed in run. I make regular inspections of where wire meets the ground to see if any attempts at digging under it have occured We have had some minor intusions in the past but each time I was able to make changes to insure the saftey of my flock. Vigilance is the minimum expected of us as protector of our flocks. On occasion I have had to dispatch or trap persistent predators. Having chickens free range makes for happy and healthier chickens but it also exposes them to more dangers. Sorry for your loss. Don't give up

Electric fences are safe to use around pets and children. Pets and kids may touch the fence once, but it is seldom repeated. My dogs avoid our electric fences like the plague. They learned the hard way. My 4 y.o. has seen me get popped by the fence and refuses to go near it. One of her little friends dared her to touch it and she said "No way. You touch it. I'm not touching it!" It won't hurt them... much. Electric fences are a great deterrent. I have them all over my property and love them.

My first suggestion is a good fence around your property for the safety of all your pets. But here's what you do with the coyote. You shoot it dead. Then you hang in on the fence for a while. The other area coyotes will see it and not come on to your property. That's what the ranchers around here do and it works. I just saw a coyote hung up Saturday and the rancher not far away like he had just hung it.
