Hi everyone! I hatched out 10 silkie chicks on 5/15 (give or take a day). I spend a fair amount of time with them all every day and have been able to guess at who’s a pullet and who’s a cockerel based off of mannerisms, feather streamers, and combs. In the last couple weeks, I have had several suspected boys crow, but there are 2 that are really throwing me off.

Anyone have any ideas? One is a satin. I’ve tried to include close ups of their combs and side profiles, but can always get more if needed. My guess is that the satin is a pullet and the brown one is a cockerel.

They would both be considered partridge colored. Very pretty. I'll guess pullets. Cockerels will start getting a larger squished comb referred to as a walnut comb. They'll also have wattles coming in faster than the pullets will, and theirs get bigger. Soon you can start seeing hackle feathers coming off the cockerels, sort of like a veil of longer straighter feathers on the back of their necks.

Thanks! I’m going to keep an eye on them and update here once they let me know what they are 😜 there was this one that started crowing that I had started convincing myself was a pullet…so I guess that really should have been my answer to this whole thread 🤣

His eyes!! Some have said when they have a mean look in their eyes, that's a rooster. Look at his eyes!

He's so pretty but you can kind of see that larger comb coming but I don't see wattles yet. Hmm! I think his hackles are starting to come in though.
