We have a rooster, along w/3 hens. One of the hens disappeared naturally we thought she had ran off or something had killed her. Our hens, my cousin said are ginnea's, spelled wrong. My dad is 81 and I'm really worried so excuse me for sounding ignorant. The hen came back, she was in the woods, beside our house, along w/a baby. Another hen is laying in the carport and refuses to move. She has been on these eggs for way over a month. I've tried, to no avail, to get her off of them, but she's MEAN. She pecked me and brought blood. Anyhow, we have a henhouse, but they refuse to stay in it. What do I do???????? I <3 animals, but I'm only an expert on anything to do w/about pitbulls'. I would really appreciate any in-put as to how/what to do raising chickens and appreciate it as well. I'm very busy w/work, home, my dogs. I'm more about hands on learning, like videos, sites to relate to this. I just don't want the hen to get an infection, disease, etc..... The eggs couldn't be any good, she has straw, and is sitting on a make shift shelf, PLEASE HELP, Not KNOWLEADGABLE ENOUGH IN KY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!

As you have found, hens can go off to nest. It sounds like it is time to put on some work gloves and grab that mean broody hen off her nest. Have a pet carrier or dog kennel with food and water prepared to put her in and hopefully after a few days her broody urges will pass. Then you can let them rejoin the flock. Does the rooster or any of the hens still come back to roost in the coop at night or have they found a new place to sleep?

If you keep them locked up in their coop for a week to three weeks then they will eventually learn to go roost there. Do you have nesting boxes in the coop? If you do, then (when they get used to staying in their coop) they will lay there too. The only reason she is being mean is because she is guarding her nest. Get gloves and put her in a place where she can be by herself. Hopefully she doesn't get broody in there! :D Good luck with your Clucky Clucks!

The way we got them to roost was to mark where they went to roost at night, and then went out with a flashlight and gathered them up and put them to bed. It only took a week or so before they started going to bed of their own accord. They are really dopey at night and easy to move. Maybe even the broody will be too! Broodies can take weeks to stop being broody, and sometimes they don't eat or drink. If she's not hatching out eggs, she may stay there even though nothing will hatch! There are some excellent threads on here about broodies.
