I don't care if a raptor is getting your chickens, shooting it is NOT the way to deal with the problem.
YOU are the one putting food out (chickens) where a raptor can see and attack it, the raptor is just trying to survive and do what raptors do, attack and eat prey.
YOU are responsible for keeping your fowl safe and in a situation where a raptor cannot get at them.
Don't even start about your right to "protect" your hens by shooting a raptor, your rights end when you are in the federal penitentiary if you are caught.
Be a responsible adult human being and do what you know is right, keep your chickens under cover if you have raptors in the area.
I heard all birds of prey are protected. I thought these threads were not to be a soapbox to preach your beliefs to others. And so often you see people using a thread as a soapbox for their personal beliefs. Sorry about your loss, that's too bad. I would not shoot a hawk, eagle, owl at all because that's big trouble if you get caught. It is a chance we all take if our girls free range. We have a chicken hawk that flies overhead frequently here, when my girls are free ranging I rush out to scoot them back in the coop. But I like seeing my girls get freedom so I take the chance and hope...
