WHY CANT THE CHICKENS JUST ROAM THE PASTURE?

They absolutely can roam the pasture and they will be allowed to, if I am out there with them to watch over them. This is a high-predator area and while I am pretty sure they'd be reasonably safe from four-legged predators in the pasture during the day because of the human activity around our little homestead, there are also a lot of hawks around. Having a nice big run immediately adjacent to the house means I can control the environment to minimize the chance of hawk attacks when I can't be out there watching them.
