I might be premature, but... Gender guesses?- New Photos 1/8/08

Arrggghh.... Thats what I thought. Though I must say, the solid blue look more rooish in her photo then IRL. Her comb in person is barely there and not red like it looks in the photo.

Sigh. I tell ya, what are the odds???? They are really beautiful, even if they are all roos. I just love thier coloring!

Yep, Caroline's kids again. Debbie, it seems that the boys all get lots of gold in their feathers whether they're black or blue and the girls do not. It's like they have a sexlinked characteristic where the boys have traits of the mother (Caroline's buff) and the girls similar to their father (Suede's Orp shape and blue or black with none or almost no gold)

That would make sense from what I read about sex-links -- that color is usually passed from father to daughter and mother to son. It seems like the genetics of it should apply to all breeds, not just those selected for sex-link production.

It does. I had four chicks hatched from the mating of a Silver Phoenix roo and Barred Rock hen, three cockerels and one pullet. All three cockerels looked like ghosty barred BR pullets with longer tails and the pullet was solid black with the shape of a Phoenix hen, just lovely. Also I have three pullets from the mating of a Cochin/Silkie cross roo and BR hen. They have poufy heads and are solid black, although two have a little gold in the hackle areas. They had a brother who was barred just like a BR, but with a poufy head.

Oh well.... They are extremely healthy, and I love the coloring, even though they are all boys! Right now, they are so big, when they lay down, the look like little butterball turkeys.

And very interesting about the sex linking of the red feathers!
