I have two ducklings, they are getting big, they are 5-6 weeks old. One of my ducklings is bowlegged and doesn't like to walk too far. I have already scoured the internet and the consensus seems to be - she's niacin deficient, give her brewers yeast.

That's great, no one says what brand. Our local feed stores have horse brewers yeast, and it is 35% protein, they are only supposed to have like 22% protein total.

Please someone help because Tractor Supply and two other feed stores are clueless as to what to do.

You need this it’s at TSC in the cattle dept once they already have leg issues this is the best for getting them up again. It will say injectable but we give orally 1 ml daily to each duckling having problems. Also get Nutritional yeast for those not having issues it’s got more niacin that all water fowl need if feeding chick starter 1 tablespoon per each cup of feed till 10 weeks of age. Give the liquid straight don’t dilute put it over peas or mealworms just enough the ducking gets the full dose

Thanks so much for your help. We just got the nutritional yeast. How long would you suggest giving the oral vitamins? Also we have 2 ducklings, they eat the same food, will it be okay to use the yeast and give the one duck the liquid vitamins?

Yes give NY in their feed and give the one having trouble the liquid until the problem is resolved for at least a week. The NY should be fed until 10 weeks old. Actually I put NY in my waterfowls feed 1x a week it’s really good for them I use it too. Since you just have the two ducklings it might be easier just to use the B Complex until your one is doing well then switch over to NY.

Exercise, exercise....Ducklings need too run around lots. In a small Brooder they only get up to eat and drink and not growing muscles to hold up the weight as they grow..

Yeast is supposed to be high in protein. This brewer's yeast https://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/custom/1323569/2 , for example, has 16 g protein out of 30 g yeast. It's a supplement and not supposed to replace feed. Your horse brewer's yeast should be usable, but I can't say for sure. I'd read the label and look at the niacin content.
I agree. If the horse stuff contains a high enough percentage of niacin then using a small amount will be fine.

@whatsyourtheory, can you tell us the name of the horse yeast? It sounds interesting and I would like to learn more about it.

When a duckling is already having trouble like this one you pull out the big guns your treating not preventing. Yes exercise is also important but right now until the ducklings legs become stronger warm water swim therapy would be the best treatment along with the liquid b complex.
