Can anyone please explain to me the deep sand method? I see it talked about all over but not really explained. And just to clarify this method is used for the inside of the coop correct?

Thanks for helping a newbie out!

dig about 6 inches deep and fill with sand

deep litter method

sift out poop every week and leave sand in coop

after 1 year do a complete clean out

sand everything chuck it away and put down fresh sand

start the cycle over

Yes, it refers to a course sand in the coop on the floor.
Not a "playsand" but more of a 'builders sand"

"dig about 6 inches deep and fill with sand

Sand has nothing at all to do with "Deep Litter"
That's done with shavings or other organic material

I'm looking for more of an inside the coop method. I unfortunately was not smart enough to make a pull of drawer under their roosts but I have made a few metal trays to catch the droppings. Hay, sand, shavings?

What a mix up of terms!

Deep litter is basically composting inside the coop using organic bedding.

Sand can be used either in the coop or in the run for good drainage in run and easy scooping of poop.

Poop boards are used to collect the majority of poop, dropped when they are roosting, for easier clean up. They usually have sand and/or zeolite(PDZ) to be scoopability and to reduce odor respectively.

Advanced search>titles only> poop boards

Hope that helps!
