I have dozens of 2x4's 2x2's and misc wood, 100 feet of chicken wire and 4 sheets of plywood plus a few misc pieces. I keep saying I am going to go out and build the thing, I have chickens on the brain.

I was thinking of putting it on the south side of the barn for a snow/wind block. I can do basic construction, I just don't know where to start? Supplies ready, weather is great, I am the problem.

I also am puzzled about the door. What have you used for a door? Do I need to walk in? I hate to go out and buy a door, can I build one?

Thanks in advance

Of Course you can build a door from the supplies you mentioned. Just start with one step at a time, do not let this overwhelm you.

Go out and start with the foundation. Then floor. Next you lay out where you want windows and door. Nests etc. Once you know where everything will go, the rest is easy. I will be happy to help walk you through the building steps.

As they say "Just do it"

Think preditor when building so you do it right the first time.

Good luck.
On the door you just frame it in the wall with the 2x4's and away you go. Use a piece of the plywood usually the heaviest you have for the door. Get some hinges and a good latch and wa la.

Sketch a plan first. Seriously. Don't try to wing it. Also this will let you ease into the construction gradually, from the sofa

If the coop is more than about 3-4' wide then yes you need to be able to walk in (thus, you also need to make it tall enough you don't go bumping your head). Same for the run, so you will almost certainly need to be able to walk into the run (unless you only want like 2 chickens).

You can easily frame out a door using plywood and/or lumber-and-chickenwire. If there's no plywood in it, make sure it has correct diagonal bracing so it don't sag. Do not worry about the door right now, though, get the rest of the structure up first.

Good luck and have fun,

Pat
