My Barred Rock Hen was my dominant hen. She was the only hen that would come to me, sit by me, loved to be held. I raised her since 2 days old. She died at age 6. She had been exiled from the flock. This was the 2nd rooster that hated her. Her own grandson. I got rid of the original rooster since he ripped her comb off. 2nd time around, she was driven from the flock. I allowed her feathers to grow so she could escape the rooster. She flew over into neighbors yard in a panic and was brutally murdered by the neighbor's dog on 12/26/2017. I did not handle it well. I understand dogs will be dogs but my neighbor threw her in the trash. My husband got her back and we buried her. The black sex links which are her daughters laid every other day without fail. After the death of my beloved Dot, all of my hens quit laying. They went through their molt in November. Are they mourning as I am? I am just devastated. The rooster actually is not an aggressive rooster and he does protect my flock. I was ready to get rid of him but my husband is attached. Please help!
