I rescued a baby chick. I don't know where to take it next.

I went to my daughter's kindergarten classroom last Tuesday and saw that they had chicks, 6 days old. One couldn't walk and was being pecked constantly by another chick. I asked the teacher if I could take it to the vet. She said they were due to be picked up by the farmer on Friday. She contacted me the next day and gave me permission because they were going to cull it. I took it to the vet and it has splayed leg. The vet only gave a 20% chance of recovery. We had him taped, brought him home and named him Batman Rose. He's doing great, in 3 days he's gained 3 grams and his hobble is already correcting! Now that he's on his way to recovering, I need to find him a home. I have 3 cats and 3 dogs. The poor guy wouldn't last around here. How do I find a loving home for him? Are there chicken rescues? This is Batman Rose, named by my 5 and 2 year olds.

There's a forum here specifically for re-homing birds to individuals, but you might have to wait until it's clear what sex your chick is before you have any takers. Not sure about your area specifically but some animal shelters do take in and rehome birds as well (ask first though, just as many take in then cull because they haven't the resources!) And you could also look around Facebook for local "Chicken Swap" groups as well, or reach out to the Adopt a Bird Network (on FB) to see if they'd feature your peep.

Since the chick is recovering, is there any chance it can go back with the rest that it hatched with? I know they were initially going to cull it, but if it's doing fine on its own now, maybe he will fit back in the flock.

You could also post on your state thread to find someone local or get info on a local rescue.

Or post on your local craigslist in the farm and garden section.
