One of my Pekins was outside quacking loudly so I went to investigate. There was a snake in the nest with an egg in its mouth. By the time I found my shovel, it had slithered under the deck. I am keeping a shovel next to the nest now.

The rest of my animals were all milling around like school kids when there is a fight.

I think it was a black snake. I just killed a huge one last week. I don't remember ever having a problem like this before; although, before I had chickens (and eggs) snakes never worried me. I saw them in the yard but didn't pay much attention to them.

Now I am a shovel totin' madwoman.

Try putting wooden eggs or golf balls in the nests. The snake will eat them along with the eggs and will die.

If you have any chicks, watch out! I had a corn snake kill and try to eat a 2 month old Easter Egger!

Well I am missing a young Mille Fleur D'Uccle and I think I know who to blame. But I have other young birds still out there.
