I have been helping out a farmer down the who got really sick with shingles right before Christmas. He has had me feed and take care if his 60 sheep, 3 border collies, and 20 laying hens he bought from me this last spring. I have been looking for a building to convert into breeding pens for 2-3 weeks now. Well I asked him if he knows anyone that has a small building like 8x12 or 8x16 for sale that I could make into a chicken coop. He said no I can't think of anyone but said you can have that one over there! I can't wait to get it over here! I cleared out a spot for it today and I am going to try to move it tomorrow afternoon if I can.

What do wou guys think? I am planning to ad a few windows and I will replace the siding on the sides and back of the building and then section it of into 6 6x6 pens and 1 8x12 pen for my laying hens. I am planning on having 6x30 runs per breeding pen or about 180 sq of run space. I am planning to have 2-6 birds in each 6x6 pen and run.

Well the building ended up not having skids underneath it. I had someone come out to see what it would cost to move it and it was more than I want to spend. The guy who I had come give me a price to move it made me an offer on the building and he bought it. I'm still looking for a building though.

:( That really sucks Nate! But you will find something!
Have you thought about calling around every business you can think of in your area and start trying to get all the free pallets you can find? I bet over a months time you would have enough to build a nice coop? I think I could find many pallets in my area, but honestly I'm a little impatient for all the looking, calling and then driving to pick them up. How lazy does that sound? lol I'm not lazy at all, just to impatient. But you should give it a try! Even just posting on craigslist for wood/lumber (building supplies) etc,..! Someone on my CL was actually selling a chicken coop and another was selling a used building that could have been used easily as a coop.

I would build a building with pallets but I am renting our small farm and I am wanting my breeding pens and I am wanting to use portable buildings because of the ease of moving them. All I literally have to do is to take the birds out of the building, clean it out the shavings and load It up! I am wanting a larger building to keep them all in one place. I am looking for at least a 8x16 building but I would take up to a 12x30' building depending on the price of course. I have thought of using pallets to decide up the pens but I'm not sure yet. Thanks for the ideas though!
