Hi! I am in northern Ohio. Southern Lorain County.
I have been a member of the group for probably 5 to 7 years but drifted away for awhile when I sold my hens a few years ago.
I was done with it. I think the last bunch I sold, I sold 60 of them for $60. I was just done.
Years ago I started out with 15 mixed brown egg layers and once my grandkids seen I didn't have a white chicken, they insisted on me getting some white ones and it just went from there to 90 hens.
Selling egg to many folks. Mainly I delivered and they were pretty much friend or family related.
Now after 2 or so years and the price of eggs sky rocketed I figured I would get back into it.
I bought a nice incubator and attempted to hatch 22 eggs that I got off of a farmer down the road.
I ended up with only 8 that hatched, and out of the 8, it was 4 and 4 plus they were Easter eggers that turned out to be hens. They are laying real good still, even with the days getting real short. The only artificial light I give them is in the afternoon from like 3 to 5:30ish just because here in Ohio the cloudy afternoon gets the coop pretty dark.
I do have a old fashion real deal farmers chicken coop. It has the wind direction roof vents and tilt in windows. I had no problem for room with the 90 when I had them.
So now, well back in October, my local hatchery had day old Golden Buffs available so I jumped on the deal and bought 3 Silver Laced Wyandots. Also when you buy from them, they have what is called a meal maker. Every order you get one so I ended up with 2 more and they appear to be Easter eggers.
So long story shorter, I got rid of the 4 rooster and with the 4 hen I hatched, and the ones I bought I am back to that 15 number.
I still have questions that need to be answered and not much better place to go than right here to find that on hands answer!!!
