They should digest it by morning. That's the crop you are feeling. It's a temporary storage area for food. Make sure to provide free access to grit.

Is there something like too much scratch? I guess it doesn't really matter, I remember my father's rooster before. we use corn trimmings as scratch, he strived just fine.

When it dilutes the nutrition they need to truly thrive.

You can't kill them short term with scratch, but as mentioned it isn't a good long term diet.
